Day 02 : Shimla
Morning after breakfast full day sightseeing visit The State Museum, Viceregal Lodge, The Prospect Hill, The Jakhu temple, and Summer hill.

The State Museum, housed in a colonial mansion, is half an hour's hike from the centre on the western edge of town. The museum has a good collection of traditional as well as contemporary art. The ground floor has a gallery with fine Pahari miniatures, a style developed under the auspices of the Kangra rulers. These traditional paintings follow the Mughal miniature style, with themes from the life of Krishna, the Hindu god of love. Other parts of the museum display a collection of traditional costumes and jewellery, stone sculptures, temple bronzes and deity masks from the Kullu valley. One room in the museum is devoted to Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, who spent some time in Shimla. The display includes caricatures of Gandhi and his encounters with the British rulers. Viceregal Lodge : The most impressive colonial edifice of Shimla.

Is the Viceregal Lodge, now known as the Rashtrapati Niwas (President's House). Sitting on the flat top of Observatory Hill, this Elizabethan mansion was built in 1888 for Lord Dufferin. It now houses the Institute of Advanced Studies, and is open only in some parts to the public.

The Jakhu Temple, sitting on top of Jakhu hill at 2,455 metres is the highest point on the ridge. This temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the monkey god, is quite appropriately beset with hordes of very aggressive monkeys. It is best to steer clear of them and keep all eatables well out of reach. Shimla has some other interesting spots that warrant a quick tour. Chadwick Falls at 1,586 metres where the river drops 67 metres and is best visited during the monsoons, the temple of Tara Devi, the Sankat Mochan Temple about 7 kms on the Shimla-Kalka road and the Himalayan Aviary close to the Viceregal Lodge, with a selection of birds like the monal, pheasant, pea fowls and peacocks.

Situated in the heart of the town, it is a massive structure built in traditional Rajput style with courtyards and separate wings for men & women. The little township is surrounded by places of historical interest, like the 9th century temple Magar Mandi, 3 kms away. Visit nearby villages to see local craftsmen at work & a little further see blackbucks, blue bulls etc.

Lakes in the desert region are a rarity having their own charm. Chhatra Sagar, 4 kms from the fort is a beautiful water body nestled between two hillocks. Built as a summer retreat, the lush green lawn, flowering trees and clear waters are like an oasis in the otherwise dry region. Boating and angling is possible. It is surrounded by lush green fields and vast grazing pastures. Chhatra Sagar, a hundred-year old reservoir with a periphery of about 10 kilometers, is an ideal destination for nature lovers and a perfect getaway from the chaotic city life.

As a hunting preserve of the Nimaj Estate, Chhatra Sagar has witnessed many exciting shikar camps and leisure parties. Today, the campsite, situated on the dam, offers breathtaking views of the sunrise, sunset and the Aravalli ranges on the horizon. The old shooting box - Aodhi has been put to good use as it provides a closer view of the water fowl and birds of prey.

Watch the birds, go for nature walks, soak in the fresh air, sit around the bonfire and listen to old folk lore - or be more adventurous and take one of the many safaris on offer. Experience the warm hospitality, and enjoy some truly delicious Indian and traditional Rajasthani meals cooked with farm fresh vegetables in the family kitchen.

Relax in the tastefully designed and well-appointed tented accommodation. Each tent has an attached bath with running hot and cold water, and its own private sit out overlooking the lake.

Pushkar is a mellow, serene and bewitching little town which attracts those in search of some respite from the tumult of India. Pushkar is right on the edge of the desert and is only 11 kms from Ajmer but separated from it by Nag Pahar, the snake mountain.

The town clings to the side of the small Pushkar Lake with its many bathing ghats and temples. For Hindus, Puhskar is a very important pilgrimage centre and you'll see plenty of Sadhus (individuals on a spiritual search).

Pushkar boasts temples, though few are as ancient as you might expect at such an important pilgrimage site, since many were deserted by Aurangzeb and subsequently rebuilt. The most famous is the Brahma Temple, said to be one of the few temples in the world dedicated to this deity. It's marked by red spire, and over the entrance gateway is the hans, or goose symbol, of Brahma, who is said to have personally chosen Pushkar as its site.

Check in at the hotel next to the lake and experience the culture. Enjoy a camel cart ride in the sunset and dinner will be at the sunset café in the evening. Overnight will be at Pushkar.

Day 10 Pushkar – Kishangarh – Pushkar: By Road 80 km return excursion
Breakfast will be at the hotel. Spend the morning enjoying sightseeing of the place including Brahma Temple. Proceed for a day excursion to Kishangarh for calligraphies and marbles. KISHANGARH is situated on the National Highway 8 in the Center of Rajasthan, 100 Km South West of Jaipur. It is primarily known for its world famous Miniature Paintings and Handicrafts and for the largest marble and granite cutting industry in the Country. Enjoy a rustic lunch at the PHOOL MAHAL PALACE after sightseeing of the fort and temple. Return to Pushkar for the night.

Day 11 Pushkar – Bharatpur: By Road 298 km/6 hr
Drive to Bharatpur after breakfast. Bharatpur, an erstwhile princely state of the Jat rulers, was founded by the great Maharaja Suraj Mal, who also once conquered Delhi. MaharajaSuraj Mal built the fort at Bharatpur as also the beautiful palaces and gardens at Deeg. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is one of the finest water-bird sanctuaries in the world. The Maharaja of Bharatpur artificially created the lake and wetland in the 19th century. The marshes of Keoladeo (area 24 sq km, established in 1956 as a bird sanctuary, 1981 as a National Park), were the privatehunting reserves of the Maharajas, and was developed in the late 19th century by creating small dams to collect rain water and by feeding it with an irrigation canal. Over the years, the lakes attracted great numbers of waterfowl and the Maharajas held grand shoots with family, friends and visiting dignitaries.

Commonly referred to as Bharatpur, the Park is a delight for bird watchers. Over 375 species of birds are found here and raised paths, camouflaged by babul trees and undergrowth make viewing easy. A quiet ride by boat in the early hours of the morning is also unforgettable experience. The cacophony is unbelievable as painted storks, open bills, spoonbills, egrets, cormorants, white ibis and multitudes of others, tend their young. Jacanas with their iridescent colors and elegant tail feathers and purple moorhen can be seen delicately treading over the floating vegetation.

The Park has over 400 resident and migrant bird species, including the Common, Demoiselle and the rare Siberian Cranes. As well as mammals like Striped Hyena, Fishing Cat, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Nilgai, Sambar, Blackbuck, wild Boar and Indian Python.

Every year Bharatpur waits with bated breath for the arrival of the Siberian cranes. There are only two wintering places for this rare species one in Iran and the other Bharatpur and these beautiful birds with their distinctive red beaks and facial patches, fly over 6400 km from their summer retreats. Reach and check in at the palace. Proceed on RICKSHAW for viewing the birds. RICKSHAW PULLERS have been trained by the forest department in bird watching and are knowledgeable. Return to the palace in the evening and relax.
Overnight will be at Bharatpur

Day 12 Bharatpur – Gwalior: By Road 150 km/4 hr
Enjoy an early morning bird watching tour of the sanctuary. Breakfast will be at the hotel. Drive to Gwalior via Agra. Visit TAJ MAHAL at Agra.

TAJ MAHAL: Little needs to be said about this architectural wonder which is always the soul raison-de-etre for every tourist's visit to Agra. Built by Shah Jahan, the Taj is a white marble memorial to his beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal. This monument took 22 years to be completed and was designed, and planned by Persian architect Ustad Isa. Apart from its stunning design balance and perfect symmetry, the Taj is also noted particularly for its elegant domes, intricately carved screens and some of the best inlay work ever seen. Continue drive and stop at FATEHPUR SIKRI for sightseeing.

Fatehpur Sikri is 37 km west of Agra. Jajal-ud-din-Muhammad Akbar, Humanyun's son, accessed the throne at the tender age of 14. While hunting around Sikri his curiosity was aroused by the songs of some minstrels about the celebrated Khwaja -Mu'inu'd-din Chisti, the founder of the Chisti order of SUFIS. Akbar, who was without a male heir heard about Saint Salim Chisti and visited him in the year 1568. The saint blessed him with 3 sons and in gratitude Akbar ordered the great mosque of Fatehpur Sikri built under his supervision. As a mark of respect to the saint, Akbar shifted his capital to Fatehpur Sikri and built various secular buildings like the Diwan -I-Am, Diwan-I-Khas, Jodhabai palace, Birbal's house, Marian's house and the Panchmahal. Drive to Gwalior and reach by late afternoon / early evening.

A little southward of Agra is the ancient city of Gwalior. Centuries of history can be witnessed even today in its monuments, temples, museums and cultural traditions. The magnificent Gwalior Fort, with its reflections of art, religion and military might, is an enduring symbol of this glorious past. The colorful history of this city dates back to the eight century and is a mosaic of Rajput clans of the Pratihasas, Kachwahas and Tomars, each leaving their marks on the city’s magnificent monuments.

Gwalior's history is traced back to a legend in 8th century AD when a chief tain known as Suraj Sen was struck by a deadly disease and cured by a hermit-saint Gwalipa. As a gratitude for that incidence, he founded this city by his name. The new city of Gwalior became existence over the centuries. The cradle of great dynasties ruled the city Gwalior. With different Dynasty, the city gained a new dimension from the warrior kings, poets, musicians, and saints who contributed to making it renowned throughout the country. The city is also the setting for the memorials of freedom fighters such as Tatya Tope and the indomitable Rani of Jhansi. Today the old settings stand side by side with the trappings of modernity.Check in at the beautiful palace hotel. Enjoy the spa at the palace. In the evening proceed for the SOUND & LIGHT SHOW at the fort. Return to the palace for a dinner on the terrace.
Overnight will be at palace.

Day 13 Gwalior:
Proceed for a sightseeing tour of the city visiting the following interesting monuments.

Gwalior Fort: Standing on a steep mass of sandstone, Gwalior Fort dominates the city and is its most significant monument. It has been the scene of momentous events, imprisonment, battles and jauhars. A steep road winds upwards to the fort, flanked by statues of the Jain tirthankaras, carved into the rock face. The magnificent outer walls of the fort still stand, two miles in length and 35 feet high, bearing witness to its reputation for being one of the most invincible forts of India. This imposing structure inspired Emperor Babur to describe it as “the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind ".

Man Mandir Palace: Built between 1486 and 1517 by Raja Mansingh. The tiles that once adorned its exterior have not survived, but at the entrance, traces of these still remain. Vast chambers with fine stone screens were once the music halls, and behind these screens, the royal ladies would learn music from the great masters of the day. Below, circular dungeons housed the state prisoners of the Mughals. Emperor Aurangzeb had his brother, Murad imprisoned, and later executed here. Close by is Jauhar Pond, where in the Rajput tradition, the Ranis committed mass sati after their consorts had been defeated in battle. At Man Mandir Palace, a poignant ambience of those days of chivalry and heroism still lingers in the silent chambers.

Gujari Mahal: Within the fort are some marvels of medieval architecture. The 15th century Gujari Mahal is a monument to the love of Raja Mansingh Tomar for his intrepid Gujar Queen, Mrignayani. The outer structure of Gujari Mahal has survived in an almost total state of preservation; the interior has been converted into Archaeological Museum housing rare antiquities, some of them dating back to the 1st century A.D. Even though many of these have been defaced by the iconoclastic Mughals, their perfection of form has survived the ravages of time. Particularly worth seeing is the statue of Shalbhanjika from Gyraspur, the tree goddess, the epitome of perfection in miniature. The statue is kept in the custody of the museum's curator, and can be seen on request.

Sas Bahu ka Mandir: Two architecturally beautiful 11th century temples.

Jai Vilas Palace: A splendor of a different kind exists in the Jai Vilas Palace, current residence of the Scindia family. Some 25 rooms have been turned into the Jivaji Rao Scindia Museum, and in these rooms, so evocative of a regal lifestyle, the past comes alive. Jai Vilas is an Italianate structure which combines the Tuscan and Corinthian architectural modes. The imposing Darbar Hall has two central chandeliers weighing a couple of tonnes, and hung only after ten elephants had tested the strength of the roof. Ceilings picked out in gilt, heavy draperies and tapestries, fine Persian carpets and antique furniture from France and Italy are the features of these spacious rooms.

Eye catching treasures include: a silver train with cut glass wagons which served guests as it chugged around the table on miniature rails; a glass cradle from Italy used for the baby Krishna each Janmashtami, silver dinner services and swords that were once worn by Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan. These are, besides, personal mementoes of past members of the Scindia family: the jeweled slippers that belonged to Chinkoo Rani, four-poster beds and gifts from practically every country in the world, hunting trophies and portraits. The Scindia Museum offers an unparalled glimpse into the rich culture and lifestyle of princely India.

Sun Temple: Located near the Residency at Morar, the newly constructed Sun Temple takes its inspiration from the famous Konark Sun Temple in Orissa.

Ghaus Mohammed's Tomb: The sandstone mausoleum of the Afghan prince, Ghaus Mohammed, is also designed on early Mughal lines. Particularly exquisite are the screens which use the pierced stone technique as delicate as lace.

Sarod Ghar: This Museum of Music has been set up in the old ancestral house of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan. It houses ancient instruments of the great Indian Masters of yesteryears. It also houses an impressive collection of photographs and documents. Sarod Ghar is a unique institution devoted to promoting Indian classical music, heritage and culture. Through this 'window' to the past, music lovers can gain a better understanding of the evolution and history of our classical music and a deeper perspective and insight into the context of the art as it exists today. Overnight will be at the beautiful palace.
Day 14 Gwalior – Jhansi: By Train Train Name : Bhopal Shatabdi Express Train No. : 2002 Departure : 0932 hr Arrival : 1048 hr Jhansi – Khajuraho: By Road 175 km/4 hr
Proceed to station for train to Jhansi after breakfast. Reach Jhansi and transfer to Orchha, 12 km away. It is a medieval city founded by the BUNDELA rulers with palaces and temples of the 16th & 17th century – which has remarkably withstood the onslaught of time. The town is known for its CHATTRIS which were built in the memory of the kings and the place is flanked by the river BETWA. Proceed for sightseeing of ORCHHA sites within the Fort Complex. Enjoy your lunch at Orchha. Drive to Khajuraho.

Situated in the northernmost part of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is famous for its enchanting temples and its legendary Khajuraho dance festival. The name Khajuraho is derived from the Khajur tree (the date palm tree) which is grown abundantly in the region. Discovery Full Circle - Commendations

Dear Charman
Namaste!

As I said to you I ve been meaning to write to you for ages but because I knew that I wanted to tell you all about the trip I knew that it would take me a while! But here I am now and I hope that this finds you well and happy.

We thought the trip was very well organised and that was due to all your hard work. As time has gone by we have both said to eachother that we would have rather taken more time to see less and in this email you will see where we would have liked to spend more time .....and where less!

Although we did have a lovely and memorable holiday it has to be said that out of the 3 areas of India I have now seen I think I liked Rajasthan least. And I think that s something to do with the many many hours that we spent in the car. Which of course the itinerary made necessary to a large extent.

Our arrival at Delhi went like clockwork and I was SO delighted to find myself 2 hours later at the magical Neerama Palace Fort hotel. We were so lucky that we arrived in the afternoon with the time to relax and enjoy the wonderful facilities.

The next hotel was very different. We liked Puskar as a place very much but would have loved a more central hotel. The Puskar Heritage Hotel had rooms that were comfortable enough but the breakfast area was not great and neither was breakfast. Powdered milk and banana porridge that took ages even though no one else was there.

Udaipur was lovely and so was the Haveli. The view from our room was perfect and we enjoyed lovely breakfasts on the rooftop apart from the moaning over extra payment for honey!!! Do you remember we chatted over it. If we travel with you again I ll have to make certain that I can have, if possible, what I enjoy for breakfast as unlike Kieron I m not keen on cooked eggs etc!

Good visit to the Jain complex which brought back memories for K as he d stayed there many years ago. Not so good was being taken to a restaurant which clearly catered for tour parties and coach loads with buffet food which was not where we wanted to be at all.

The next stop was Jodphur at the Hotel Devi Bhawan with a lovely huge peaceful room and a peaceful breakfast overlooking the gardens and unfortunately more money for honey problems! I thought our guide in Jodphur was very good both in the evening and the next day at the palace. We should have stayed 2 nights in Jodphur I think as it s a great place.

We left Jodphur to go to the village of Jama to stay with the villagers. I m afraid I have to say I did not enjoy this stay very much. We were meant to get there for lunch and we didn t. I m glad about this. We arrived about 3 and Mr M.P.Singh seemed to be an elder of the village and their home was attached to what had been some quite grand buildings. We sat for ages in the courtyard but when Mr Singh was not there we couldn t chat much. Fortunately I was able to spend some time drawing.

We stayed in the room that belonged to the son and his wife. The bed was right next to an air conditioning unit and we had to sleep on the same bed clothes as had been left by the couple. No sleep! I did expect basic conditions but would rather sleep on clean ground where it s quiet. Our meals were not with the family....the food was good....However we were sat in the old building on our own except for the mice running around. We did expect a family experience. We did a camel ride for about an hour.

Jaisailmar next. This was perfect and we had time to enjoy this place. The Hotel Victoria I cannot praise highly enough. The manager Sushil was absolutely charming to us. Do send your clients here as they will be very happy. We were so looked after, from the hot drinks on arrival to the most delicious food served on the rooftop. Breakfast was just what I wanted with fruits and pancakes which were freshly cooked. Beautiful room. Saw lots with the guide in the morning.

I hadn t understood somehow that we were going to be doing a camel ride here as I think I d though that the sand dunes experience was going to be at the previous place. If I had then I think I would have just settled for the ride at Jaisailmer. Sadly the day that we were going to do the ride a sand storm occurred and although our guide seemed a bit surprised I think, we didn t want to go on camels in a sand storm!! I would have loved to see the sand dunes as they seem to be a highlight to many.

Bikaner. A rather mixed experience. The fort was interesting. Camel farm ok. Palace Hotel was beautiful and we had a splendid room. On reading about it I think I would have preferred to stay at the other hotel as we arrived rather late to swim and even Kieron was challenged by the cold water in the pool! Restaurant here is very poor indeed and we had to send the food back. Too many tour groups here have spoilt it I think.

I did go into the Rat Temple and a very interesting experience it was.

Jaipur. What a great choice the Alsisar Haveli was! A serene and lovely place. A contrast from the intense tourism of the Amber Fort!!!! Our guide here was great. Did his best to get us through the crowds and gave us good advice about all the photographers etc.

Rathambore. Not impressed with Safari Resort. No hot water. Ever. Rats in the restaurant. The swimming pool was filthy. Loved the safaris in Ranthambore and we saw a tiger and lots beside.

Orchha. A very comfortable hotel with a lovely bed and air con that was quiet and not freezing. Just right. Town most interesting and we had a very good time exploring it.

Khahujaro. Radisson Hotel most comfortable but a little far out. Would have liked to have been in the town to wander around. But did appreciate the comfort of the Radisson after the journey. The guide here was truly EXCELLENT and quite the very best we had. He was most knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with him. He was able to answer many of the questions Kieron had!

Train journey to Delhi was also excellent. What good service on this train.

Our driver Mohan was a careful steady driver who took good care with us and didn t take risks. If we do another journey with you, and I hope we do, then it would be good to have a driver with more English so that we get to know him better. Also, I know that I did ask for a careful driver which is very important but it was a little frustrating when the road was clear to be driven at 50km. The journeys often took longer than stated.

I ve tried to give you a real idea of how the trip was and hope that s ok with you. I ve recommended you to a lot of people so I hope you ve got some business

.
We ve had a brief chat about a trip to the foothills of the Himalayas next August maybe. What s the situation in the Kashmir area now? I ve heard mixed reports. And I d still like to see the rock garden! I m going to have to do some research. But if you have any thoughts and possible itineraries as starting points then I would be very interested.

Many thanks for all you did Very best wishes

Teresa - England

hello Chaman Sorry i have taken so long to reply.
We are still trying to settle into a normal routine. We would like to thank you and all your collegues, for organising such a hassle free and enjoyable holiday. Everything went like clock work from the moment we landed in Delhi.

Excellant chioce of hotels. Clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were very good. Great guides. All were informative and really wanted to us to enjoy our time in India. We always felt safe and taken care of. Reliable, friendly and helpful driver. We feel he went beyond his normal role as a driver to make our trip easier. Even taking David to a reliable, clean and good barber!

We would also like to thank you for your understanding re the payment of money. We were quite panic stricken. We do not mind if you pass our email address to potential customers. We will give you a glowing wrap. Again. Thank you for organising our once in a life time Indian holiday.

Bye Kim, David, Annika and Luke – Australia

hello, chaman.

the guides were wonderful and informative. i felt safe at all times. the hotels you book were also great, nothing to complain about. and the driver, Omprakash was helpful at all times. I am recommending your services to all my friends here who'd like to visit india. i'm also planning to go back and see Rajahstan hopefully next year, when the climate is cooler and i'll be sure to e-mail you to arrange that trip :)

thank you again and i hope we get to meet next time. take care :)

OK, mr.chaman that’s great – sorry for the slight mix up, PayPal for some reason needed me to re set the account and I still do not know why the Credit Card did not go through as there is more than enough funds available.

I am going to recommend your services to a number of people as we were so pleased with the service you provided – quality of drivers and guides and it was all perfectly managed – the holiday went off without a hitch and we had a truly memorable experience which is most down to the organisation skills of your team and the attention and care you show – so we thank you so much for all you did. A number of friends are keen to experience India also and I have told them about you – I am though slightly confused about which website to advise them to look at as you have so many on your email ! – could you let me know which one I should advise them to use – I will give them you contact details anyway.

I forget to mention to you that our trip was made all the more special as in checking-in at the Palace, we were upgraded to suites, and in checking in at Haveli we were upgrade to Deluxe Rooms(which were effectively suites also) – so we had fabulous rooms. My mother managed to take some 1,300 photographs – she is back in the UK now sifting through them all – thank goodness for digital cameras !! Many thanks again and we hope to be in contact about our next trip to India in the near future.

Best regards Simon Trafford, B.Sc.,M.R.I.C.S. Qatar / UK

Dear Chaman Namaste !!

Thank you for your mail . we are back home safely. thank you for your well plan trip for our 10 days holiday in Delhi triangle and Kashmir. everything was running smooth and fine . no complaint whatever on your side. perhaps a little advice on the food will be great as not much of choice is available along the itilinery.

the restaurents were serving the almost same menu though claiming to be serving chinese , continental food . of course , it depends on where your clients are from . after the tour , almost every monuments are in muslim origin and just wondering where is the majority on Hindi religious praying ground in Delhi.

thanks. Fam – Malaysia
